The ride on the bus was eye-opening. The humans and shifters of this time had found ways to journey with great speed, it nearly made me sick. After a while I became used to the motion and was able to enjoy the sights. I knew it when we reached what Betty and Caroline had called ‘the city’. The buildings were towering structures that loomed over everything. There was no way a dragon could shift and fly easily through the minimal open spaces. I shook my head in awe.

I didn’t have enough money left for a motel room, and I’d already spent a great amount of the hundred I’d started with. Instead, I started walking, watching the people to see if I could spot Kane. His image was engraved on my brain and I missed him so much it made my heart hurt. As it got dark, I came across a park and decided it was warm enough, I could find a secluded spot and get some sleep. In all my walking, I hadn’t noticed any vanguard here. At least none that were wearing the uniform. Sighing, I sank down on a bench and pulled the bag from my back. I opened it to pull the photo of Kane out and found a white bag inside. I pulled it out and found it filled with fruit and small cakes and a couple bottles of water.

“What in the—” I said with wonder and then grinned. “Betty.” She must have visited the store next to the bus station while I was buying my ticket. “That was so sweet of her.”

I smiled, grateful once again for having met her. I ate the apple and one of the cakes and then drank down a bottle of water. Feeling less hungry, I stretched out on the bench as best I could, and put the bag under my head with my arm looped through one of the handles.

At about five in the morning, a man in a blue uniform that said NYPD on it, roused me from my sleep. “Sir, there is no loitering in the park. You must leave.”

I stretched and nodded. “Okay, I’m sorry, I’ll go.” I slid the bag on my back and headed out of the park. I spent the morning wandering, searching every face for Kane, but found him nowhere. By three I was weary and headed back toward the park despite the warning from the man in the blue uniform, who I’d discovered was a police officer, a person who enforced laws for the humans and shifters. Unlike the vanguard, they didn’t have a prejudice against shifters, just law-breakers.

I was almost to the park again when I noticed a bar like the one in the town Betty lived in. Feeling like I needed a drink, I headed in. I headed right up to the counter, which funnily enough was called ‘the bar’ and sat on a stool.

“What can I do you for?” the man asked.

“Whiskey,” I said, recalling what I’d had before.
